STREET NAMES AND STREET SIGNS
Everything Streets: Street Naming and Street Sign Process for the City of Oviedo
Below is the information needed to help select a new street name and renaming a street in the City of Oviedo.
Process for naming new streets:
- The names of public streets shall not be duplicates of names of existing public streets or private ways. The selection of names shall be closely coordinated with the GIS and Seminole County E-911 communication systems.
- The City shall avoid street names that are likely to be confused with the names of existing public or private streets.
Process for renaming a street:
- All requests for renaming of city streets must come from residents of the City or from City Council.
- City streets may be re-named in honor of an individual. The name of the street shall be the name of a person. That person should have made a significant contribution to the history, progress development, or culture of Oviedo during his or her lifetime. The person must have been a resident of the City of Oviedo at the time of the significant contributions were made.
- Must follow the process for naming new streets above in 1 and 2.
- The City Council shall not consider changes to the name of street that has already been named in honor of a specific individual.
- Street name changes must be adopted by ordinance, following public hearing. Notice of the public hearing will be provided to all property owners whose property abuts the street to be renamed. Notice will also be provided to any businesses located on the street to be renamed. Public notice shall also be provided in the newspaper in advance of the public hearing.
- In all other respects, the procedures employed for renaming of the city streets shall conform to the processes established by the City’s Land Use Administrator as set forth in the Land Development Code.
When naming a street, the following criteria shall be followed. Streets cannot be named after/for an individual, cannot differentiate the same street name by variations in the suffix/designation, cannot duplicate or sound similar to an existing street name or a street name currently reserved. Avoid names that can have a variation in the spelling, as this causes confusion.
The website below will help in choosing a name and avoid using a name that already exists in Seminole County. https://www.seminolecountyfl.gov/departments-services/county-managers-office/e-911/911-master-street-search.stml
Street names existing on this website will not be approved. Suggested street names submitted for review, exclude the designation/suffix. USPS website: https://pe.usps.com/text/pub28/28apc_002.htm
Please do not suggest street names that are street designations/suffixes as indicated.
Example: ARCADE should not be suggested as this is street suffix.
EXISTING AND RESERVED STREET NAMES and Street Naming Guide
Please DO NOT label any 'proposed' street names on any plans (site plans, subdivision (plat) plans, etc.), until you have sent the proposed name to Addressing for review and have received approval for the street name.
After you selected a name please email gis@cityofoviedo.net with several names after you have checked the names with the two websites above (911 Master Street Index Search and USPS Street Suffix Abbrevation). and GIS will review and verify the names with the county. GIS will then email you back with the names that can be used.
