Home Heating Safety Tips

The City of Oviedo Fire Rescue Department encourages you to practice Home Heating Fire Safety Tips.  Although you would not normally consider Florida to experience a large volume of Home Heating related fires, they do in fact occur during the cooler weather months.

Common Home Heating Fire Safety Tips include:

  • Have your chimney cleaned and inspected every 5 years by a professional vendor.

  • Do not build to large of a fire in your fireplace and do not use pine kindling or firewood.

  • Do not leave the fireplace burning should you leave the home or leave unattended for any length of time.

  • Close glass doors on fireplace upon leaving the room or install an added chain or glass barrier for added protection.

  • When using artificial logs, do not use more than 1 log at a time.

  • Fireplace ashes can remain warm for several days.  When cleaning the fireplace, remember the ashes can retain heat and do not leave in container inside the home or garage, rather discard outdoors immediately.  Wet ashes with a garden hose.

  • When using a portable heater, only use a UL approved portable heater with a tip over shut off capability & do not use extension cords.

  • Do not leave portable heaters turned on or plugged in if you leave the home, nor is it recommended to leave running when going to sleep.

  • Make sure you have working smoke alarms throughout the home.

  • Keep portable heaters safely away from bed linen, drapes, clothes, blankets, furniture, etc.

  • Avoid using flammable heaters inside the home such as propane, kerosene, etc.
