In Place Sheltering
During an emergency event that is usually localized to a small geographic area of the community, local Public Safety Officials (Police & Fire Rescue Emergency Management) may implement In Place Sheltering procedures. In Place Sheltering simply stated is remaining indoors of your home, business, or other location during a localized emergency. This may also include isntructions to secure the building by locking all doors and windows, as well as securing the garage door and perhaps during a hazardous materials incident instructions to turn "off" the air handling system. In Place Sheltering is selected on a case by case basis in which it would cause more danger to evacuate and place you and your family at greater risk of injury.
In Place Sheltering would be communicated to you via reverse 911 calling procedures, or perhaps via a door to door notification from public safety officials. The local media may also assist in the announcement. The City of Oviedo Fire Rescue Emergency Management encourages you to develop a In Place Sheltering Plan so you may be prepared to be self sustained for a period of time. These preparations should include medications, food, water or other refreshments, fans, etc.,
