Did you know you live in the Lightning Capital of the U.S.?

The City of Oviedo has invested in a Lightning Detection & Warning System for all of our City Recreation & Parks locations.  Central Florida is recognized as the "Lightning Capital" of the United States and encounters more lightning per square mile than any other state.  Lightning often travels well in advance of a storm and lingers afterwards as well!

Lightning Detection & Warning Systems at our City Recreation & Parks locations are designed to provide you with several minutes of warning should a lightning storm threaten the Oviedo community.  The Lightning Detection & Warning System will emit an approximately 15 second "horn" style blast with a blinking strobe light indicating that lightning has been detected in the immediate area.

You are encouraged to seek immediate shelter inside a building or your vehicle for the best level of protection.  Trees, canopies, awnings, overhangs, dugouts, pop up shade structures, pavilions do not offer suitable protection...

Lightning Safety Tips Include:

1) Seek shelter inside a building or vehicle.

2) Be aware of the approaching storm and threat of advanced or early lightning activity and observe lightning that lingers after you believe the storm has passed.

3) Monitor local weather reports.

4) Subscribe to free severe weather alerts from local news media web sites and receive free alerts via your cell phone.

5) Suspend outdoor activities such as lawn work, golf, walking, bicycle, sporting events, etc., until the threat no longer is present.

6) If your home or business is struck by lightning, call 911 immediately.  Fires often occur in unseen spaces such as the attic or walls and can burn unnoticed for a considerable amount of time until detected.

7) Avoid showering, swimming, etc., during a storm.

8) Consider lightning protection measures such as appliance and electronic power surge protection and other lightning protection such as power utility company surge protection service.  Lightning grounding systems are also available for the home or business and should be installed by a licensed contractor.

9) Make sure your home insurance policy provides proper replacement coverage for appliances, electronics, and other lightning related damage.

10) Play it safe-stay indoors during a lightning storm!
